The inspiration behind "A Thousand Masks" stems from the vibrant spirit of Yingge dance, a non-material cultural heritage of the Chaoshan region. The dance's intricate facial makeup, a symbol of heroism, serves as the primary design element. The design team, led by Zejia Lin, aimed to introduce this traditional art form to a modern audience through contemporary design.
"A Thousand Masks" features brooches, earrings, and hand ornaments, each crafted with the lines of Yingge facial makeup as the basic form. The two-dimensional shapes are transformed into 3D models, creating a dynamic spatial effect. The designs juxtapose density and spacing, adding depth and complexity to each piece.
The collection incorporates traditional Chaozhou embroidery from the Chaoshan region, infusing the designs with a touch of local heritage. The metal parts, made of gold, elevate the overall sense of modernity and quality. The pieces are realized through cast copper plated with 18K gold and intricate embroidery, showcasing a harmonious blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern technology.
The design process, which spanned from February to June 2018 in Guangzhou, China, presented several challenges. The team had to maintain the form characteristics of Yingge facial makeup while ensuring the pieces were wearable and exhibited a modern style. The project required extensive research, data collection, and field visits to understand the nuances of Yingge dance and successfully translate them into the designs.
"A Thousand Masks" was exhibited at the Art Museum of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Art in July 2018 and the Fifth Intangible Heritage Fair in Shandong Province, China, in September 2018. The collection allows wearers to experience traditional culture through artistic and challenging products, offering a unique interaction between the wearer and the piece.
With "A Thousand Masks," Dongguan GAFA C&C Institute has not only created a stunning jewelry collection but also breathed new life into a traditional art form. The project serves as a testament to the power of design in preserving and promoting cultural heritage, demonstrating the potential for innovation in the intersection of tradition and modernity.
